Story of 'Establishment of Somnath'
Moon we see in the sky is Chandra dev son of Maharshi Atri and Anusuya, Chandra Dev was very handsome and good looking. Once there was a king named Daksh son of Lord Brahma who was considered as manager of earth at that time, he was very arrogant and egoistic, he was a big deity of Lord Vishnu and he also hated Shiva as much as he loved Vishnu because Shiva cut the 5th head of his father brahma due to some reasons. The Adhi Shakti was also born as Sati (daughter of Daksh) who loved Shiva and desired to marry him. Adhi Shakti is a part of Shiva which was given to Brahma to make the world.
Chandra married to two daughters of Daksh named Revti and Rohini. Chandra used to do partiality with them he always used to love Rohini only. He wasn't interested in Revti, but he was forced by Daksh to marry Revti too. When Daksh came to know that Chandra is not giving similar rights to both wives, Daksh became angry and gave him a curse that he will become a soil statue. However, everyone in the world was panic, because without Chandra the world will be imbalanced and die. All Sapta Rishis went to a sea shore in Gujarat where Chandra's body was kept which was converting into soil slowly. Everyone was panic and started seeking help, at that time Rishi Markand came and gave the Mrityunjaya mantra which can cure even dead, he got this mantra as Vardaan from Lord Shiva. Each and Every person the earth, and all the Sanyasis came and started chanting Mrityunjaya Mantra. Then Lord Shiva came who took the Chandra and put him in his Jata and make the Chandra as a part of Shiva, as Shiva can't die, Chandra would be safe from the curse. After the savior, Chandra confesses his mistake and promises to treat his wives similarly. On that day, all Devas arrived to that place and Lord Vishnu announced that that place will be considered as Somnath because at that place Chandra was saved with World by Lord Shiva.
Moon as two more names other than Chandra which are Som and Indu. Therefore, as Shiva wearied Chandra AKA Som on his head, he became Somnath, the lord of moon, the place was established as Somnath where Shiva used to live in the form of Shiv-Linga. That's how Somnath was established.
